A Rechargeable Battery That Spies on You
Sausalito, I love the rechargeable battery USB Cell from Moixa Energy, because 1) it eliminates the need for often unnecessary piece of equipment and 2) will outrage privacy advocates and Libertarians.
The USB Cell is essentially a rechargeable nickel metal hydride batteries, plug the USB came up. A cover
with positive nodes slides over the plug, so it can be used in flashlights, cameras and other equipment.
Attaching a USB interface reduces the amount of energy that can be stored in a battery, admitted CEO Simon Daniel during the chat in the corridor Going Green conference held this week. If supercharged AA nickel metal hydride can store 2500 milliamp hours, USB Cell can not 1300 or 1500.
The integration of the USB port, however, means that it is possible to charge him slapping it into the USB port of your computer. Yes, you do not have to carry a charger on the road, so long as you have a notebook. Charging through the computer is more effective than charging one of those store-bought chargers, because power supplies and other components in a computer are more efficient, he said.
Moixa on AA batteries are already on sale in selected stores. The company is also working on lithium-ion battery with a USB interface for phones. (See photo.). The companies will mainly branding and design batteries and let others sell them under their brand names.
But where is the privacy scandal? It is the software that Moixa has launched a couple of batteries. Batteries are the pop-up ads and / or advice on energy saving, when they plug into the charges. Suppose that you have a couple of batteries from the game controller. The batteries will, if programmed in such a way as to start a pop-up advertising and discount coupons for the game devices. The ads are relatively unobtrusive and it is my error, but unexpected advertising makes some people go BONKERS. Expect puerile scandal in the photosphere.
But that’s not all. Moixa is also developing software that can monitor energy consumption and how to use their products. Let’s say the battery with a battery-powered hot water boiler. In considering how often you charge them and how much the fee is needed, the software will be able to determine, conceivably, if you are boiling the water every time, he said. Thus, your batteries can begin to observe your behavior without you noticing. And how this program will always require customers opt-in. It could also help reduce energy consumption; one of the great challenges now is trying to teach people how they actually use electricity.
But that’s not enough to whiff Big Brother in it to drive people like Declan McCullagh, said the government watchdog, on the wall.
